Velvet Antler

Starting in 1988, we exported Red Deer velvet. As the percentage of Sika in the herd increased, we were able to export it as Sika velvet rather than Red velvet.

The velvet antler is removed at the stage of growth when the trez tine is about to emerge - at about 45 days after button drop or casting of the antlers. In another 45-50 days, similar growth will have appeared. Both cuts of velvet are removed under strict National Velvet Accreditation Scheme Guidelines which involve veterinary supervision.

This velvet is a premium product used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The reddish colour of the growing antlers shown here is a distinctive feature of Dybowski Sika. As you would expect there is some variation in the velvet’s colour but generally Dybowski have this red colour.

As you can see in the picture of the Red deer velvet, the bez tine forms quite near the brow tine. Sika deer do not have a bez tine.
